History of Tajweed

During the time of the Prophet (SAW), there was no need for people to consciously observe Tajweed as they naturally spoke in what is now referred to as Tajweed. However, as Islam spread and Arabs mingled with non-Arabs, errors in Qur’an recitation began to emerge. This prompted scholars to document the rules of Tajweed. Today, due to the significant changes in the standard Arabic language from the Classical Arabic in which the Qur’an was revealed, even Arabs must study and apply Tajweed.

Purpose of Tajweed

The holy Quran consists of the words of Allah, with each syllable divinely inspired. When reciting, we must approach it with utmost seriousness. The purpose of Tajweed is to ensure accurate and proficient recitation of the Quran, observing the correct pronunciation of each letter along with the applicable rules and characteristics, avoiding any exaggeration or deficiency. Each Arabic letter has a Makhraj, an articulation point in the mouth or throat from which it originates, and Sifaat, attributes or traits unique to it.

Understanding the Makhraj and Sifaat of each letter is a crucial aspect of Tajweed. Some letters have very similar articulation points, making it easy to mix them up. If one does not recognize the unique attributes of each letter, there is a risk of altering the meaning of the words during Qur’an recitation. Following the rules of Tajweed helps prevent errors and ensures the correct recitation of the Quran.
